Second Week

Before starting draw sketches of every cubic area in home, sketch what you want there. Put all these sketches either in a folder or on a clipboard. These sketches will become your maps of your work. They are flexible and not cast in stone. Keep white spaces around each sketch and only work on one side of the paper as you will be using these for notes as you work.

The basic plan is to Clear, Clean, Sort, Evaluate, Arrange, Document, and Reevaluate while Maintaining.

To proceed; take cleaning tote, limit box and sketch to cube. On back of sketch, note what is presently there. Remove everything from the cube in the following fashion. Fill the limit box, if that is everything, clean the surfaces and leave it empty while you go to the sorting station and deal with what is in the limit box. It is very important to move away from the space to evaluate what is there and to enjoy the clear space. If there is still more stuff in the cube, go refill the limit box and continue to sort. The goal is to not make another mess as we deal with our current messes. Ideally, each person in the family should have their own Limiting Box to use during family cleaning times as well as their own cleaning tote. That one thing helped get my family helping more than any other. We use an organic orange cleaner so that when my three year old grandson is visiting he can still help clean.

As you sort, label things. If you have books that go to a different bookshelf, stick a post-it note on them with that location. If you need to get a stain out of something for the resale shop, pin a note on the stain. Keep a running list of what's in the thrift shop box for tax purposes.

Before putting anything in the space, evaluate your plan based on what accumulated there before. Label the space so that you know what goes there. If it is a drawer, label containers or make a map on a 3x5 card to stick on the side of the drawer .

Arrange everything that is scheduled for that space. If something is inaccessible (or lost) label the space so you don't put something else there.

Document. Take the time each day to document what you have done, even if it is just your notes on your sketches. It tells you where things are and gives you a positive success feeling as you review them.

First "cubes" should be

Food prep area in kitchen

Beds, clean and made

Sort station

Towel Racks/Rods in bathroom and kitchen

Entryway

Couch

Other than Beds, Couches and Dining Tables, don't try and tackle spaces much bigger than a cubic foot. Everything can be broken down to that size of space (or less)

Papers: As you find papers put them in the limiting box unless they are "VERY IMPORTANT PAPERS" in which case you put them in the VIP folder in your cleaning tote. As you sort through the limiting box, put the papers into the appropriate folder in your paper box. I throw away envelopes and junk papers as I sort. It is very important to not try and sort as you remove from the cube. Do it when you are at the sorting station.
